Well it’s an app that needs to be open in order to, you know, work like any other app.So really, there isn’t a way to play Pandora and lock the ipod.

I will just suggest that you disable the locking for the time you are listening to Pandora. That or if you’re at home and have an iHome, just stick the pod in it with the app open.
