The Birth of New cars use LED lights to be greener  .

Article by Car LED Lights

Installing LED lights can be a quick and easy way to make green driving, according to a report from the bulb manufacturer Osram Sylvania

Jonathan Dunlap, an automotive lighting engineer with the company, wrote. paper in 2008 about how LEDs affect power consumption, but said that the trend is only just taking hold, with some publications take the research

Behind the new interest. seems to be the obsession with greening vehicles, with both drivers and cars trying to squeeze every inch of efficiency to save fuel and ultimately, the planet

Over the past several decades., car lights such as headlights, tail lights or indicators have traditionally been illuminated using incandescent lamps, which typically use a tungsten-halogen or xenon.

However, a growing number of manufacturers, starting with the Audi and Lexus, have been incorporating light emitting diodes (LEDs) to light the car, because they tend to offer longer life and greater resistance to vibration.

One other benefit, which Osram Sylvania says it will become increasingly important as automakers try to “reinvent the automobile,” is that LEDs require much less power.

That power reduction, which may go unnoticed in 2008, could make a big difference for electric cars now starting to hit the road

Jonathan Dunlap

tests suggest. that the difference in power consumption between halogen lamp and LED systems can be almost 9.5 miles of driving, which can be as many as one third of the various plug-in hybrid like the new Prius

. Even with conventional vehicles, LED lamps reduce energy consumption and therefore increase efficiency, says Osram Sylvania.

“A 28-watt LED lamp emits only 196 grams of carbon dioxide per 100 kilometers compared to 768 grams of carbon dioxide per 100 kilometers from conventional 110 watt H7 halogen lamps,” said David Dunlap colleagues Hullick

The problems associated with LEDs, which include problems with heat dissipation and installation costs, means that for now, they are more common on the indicators and brake lights instead of lamps. – Although it seems that, before too long, they could help us all turn green.

This is the first real LED Rotator minibar. Using eight three watt led’s the beacon’s reflectors spin silently “beaming” the light 360°, just like the old halogen rotators. The difference is that this mini-lightbar is bright, quiet, reliable and trouble free for years to come. With no bulbs to burn out or break, and much lower current draw than halogens, this minibar provides the “pop” of a rotator with the beneifits of LED. @AdmiralKakarot Certainly. We can wire in the plug and supply the magnets. You will then just have to bolt them on once you receive the package.

@AdmiralKakarot Yes, it is exactly as you see it. If you wish to have it configured with a cigar plug, we can easily do this for you at no charge. Just give us a call and we’ll be more than happy to make this work for you.

@ResponderPSE im no good at wiring. the last time i tried to rewire a light i nearly blew myself into a wall and im not even joking about that. does this light come in a beacon?

@AdmiralKakarot We can do blue and we can sell you a set of 90# pull magnets as well as a cigar plug cable. You would then have to put them together since ECCO does not sell a plug in version of this light. Call us and I’ll be happy to assist you.

i want to custom order this in blue with magnets and a 12vdc cigar plug. is there a way you could hook me up with that?

I saw these on a construction vehicle during the sunlight a couple of months ago…not impressed. I’ll stay with solid-state LED flashing. Thanks for posting this!

@ResponderPSE OK, thanx couse i thinked like that on cars: it starts with gasoline and goes farther with electricity. sorry for my bad English

@fireworkfreak100 “hybrid” in the sense that it uses stationary leds with a rotating reflector. So it’s not a true rotator where the reflector rotates around the light source. But this way, more than 90% of the light energy is directed out by the mirror.

ive seen the beacon version of this pretty impressive. its only downfall is the sun reflecting off the upper side of the reflector, if youre at the right angle, the sun is brighter. too bad the minibar didnt have a better housing.

I agree. I think this this product brings together the best of both worlds. However, ultimately, I would like to see a true led rotator bar but I doubt it will ever happen.

I’d love to see a full-size lightbar version of this item. You could do so many things with that setup.

  • Natesmodelrailroad
Natesmodelrailroad Say (November 18, 2011 at 10:56 pm)

Right, and that was my exact thought, too.

One thing they could do is with a dash mount light, use an interchangeable flash speed, which isn’t all that hard.

  • ResponderPSE
ResponderPSE Say (November 18, 2011 at 11:43 pm)

I don’t know that it would be possible without putting led’s in the top of the unit so the reflector would be illuminated on both sides. Right now, their focus is modifying the unit so they can make this light available in a magnet mount. I see your point though.

    Hi,

sorry, no, you won’t be able to change the taillights simply or fairly inexpensively. I’ve run into this type of question before, just with the standard halogen headlamps being switched to HID units.

The wiring and control modules for the LED’s are simply not present in the ’02. While they are both power loops providing energy from the 12 volt battery to the bulbs, the LED’s require different voltage and an entirely different type of harness, not to mention an entirely new taillight lens assembly.

Call your local Toyota dealership and ask to speak to the parts department. Ask them what the ’06 lens’ alone would run, then see about the wiring harness’. It will be costly because you are changing a major portion of the vehicle wiring. It is possible there may be aftermarket units, but I would be very cautious about changing the braking wires so fundamentally.

BTW, the taillights, just like the headlights, in the Highlander Hybrid, are run from the 12 volt system, not the NiMH hybrid battery. Those are two totally separate power systems.
