  I think not too many people know both. Either one uses Hindu (“Indian” or “Vedic” mean the same thing as far as I know) or one uses Western. I have come across a few things that I will put down here.

  Hindu astrology uses the planets as they were used for thousands of years, which are the visible planets in the sky. That includes Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn, which are recognized as days of the week the world over. Western astrology uses three other planets, discovered after the development of the telescope by Galileo, including Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. I think Hindu does not bother with asteroids, but I am not sure. If not it would be for the same reasons, that is, because they don’t have any historical basis. Historical meanings are important to Hindu astrology and therefore, the newly discovered planets and asteroids have no good meaning basis like the traditional planets.

  Another difference I have come across is the Hindu concept of Manglik, which deals with the house location of Mars. Therefore, Mars’ house location in 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th, and 12th Houses causes problems with marriage or relationships. In Western astrology this is not so, (Mars’ aspects to other planets is important in Western, although planets in Houses are secondary.) At least that is my understanding. Mars and Saturn are malefic in both systems. 1st is opposite 7th. 4th is square to 7th. I think Mars in 8th and 12th are Manglik, that is, makes marriage difficult, because 8th is opposite 2nd, (money waster) and 12th is opposite 6th (poor health, lazy). So actually there is a lot of common ground in this matter.

  I think the meanings of the seven traditional planets and houses and signs are all fairly common to both metods. However, I think Hindu interpretation depends more on Houses, while Western interpretation depends more on aspects.

  Hindu also apparently corrects for the problem of succession of the equinoxes, while Western does not. This causes the two systems to differ significantly in determining where the constellations are on a chart, in relation to houses.

  In Hindu astrology the Houses have Lords. In Western astrology the Houses have rulers. I think there is difference only in that the three outer planets become rulers which is not the case with Hindu astrology. Example: Aquarius is ruled by Uranus in Western astrology; Saturn is lord of Aquarius in Hindu…I think.

  I’m not very certain about any of this. I study Western astrology. Bottom line, Western astrology has evolved, Hindu has not.

  Oh yes, one more thing. Hindu charts are rectangular. Western charts are circular.

  Indian astrology is the oldest wisdom found even in Atharva Veda 3000 B.C. back. Indian astrology is based on the relative positions of stars or planets at the birth time. Mainly the nine planets are supposed to influence the life of a person. These are Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupitor, Saturn and two shadow planets Rahu and Katu. To predict life events of a Person the relative positions of these planets are determined and several charts and Dashas Are made and calculated. There were several Rishies who gave several systems to calculate & prepare these charts and Dashas. Prominent names among them are Parasher Rishi and Varahamihir and many others. It is quite difficult, even to study a system thoroughly.

  Where did astrology come from? It is believed that the Western form of astrology originated in ancient Babylon and then spread to other nations and to other lands. It was found to be in Greece in the middle of the fourth century BC and then hit Rome before the Christian era began. From there, it spread throughout the world with the Roman Empire.
