The Importance Of zoetrope.

Article by S K Dayal07

Since time immemorial, humans have a tendency to capture the sense of motion in their art form. Of the eight legged boar in the caves of Altamira in northern Spain for the painting next to the remains of long dead pharaohs, this search for motion capture has become a common theme throughout much of human artistic effort. Forerunner of today’s comics are found in the form of wall decoration that dates back to Egypt around 2000 BC. The caves are decorated with ancient Egyptian drawings of different hand curve and this is really describing a particular storyline. From cave drawings alone, archaeologists now find the facts about their civilization.

Not only in Egypt, but the practice is known in other parts of the world. The Japanese used scrolls to tell continuous stories. In 1828, a Frenchman, Paul Roget find thaumatrope and this for the first time, give a correct understanding of the animation. Basically, the animation is entirely dependent on the fundamental principle of the human eye. Thaumatrope is a disk with a string or pegs are attached to both sides. One side of the disc showed a bird, cages were empty. When the disk is spinning, the bird appeared in the cage. This proves that the eyes retain the image when exposed to a series of pictures, one by one.

In the world of animation, two other findings served as a milestone. Phenakistoscope Joseph Plateau and Pierre zoetrope Desvignes’ has decided to be the two biggest discoveries in the field of animation. Joseph was the discovery of a circular card with slits around the edges. The viewer holds the card in the mirror and peered through the slits as the card is spinning. Through a series of images around the circumference of the card, the viewer saw the development of the image produced in a moving object. Zoetrope also follow the same principles. But in a zoetrope, a piece of paper containing the images on the inside of the drum as a cylinder is used. The discovery of Thomas A. Edison in the form of the motion camera and projector to give a new dimension to the creation of practical animation. In 1906, Stuart Blackton produced a short film titled “Humorous Phases of Funny Faces’. In particular movie, he pulled a funny face on the board, photographing them, and then removed to pull the other stages of facial expressions. This” stop-motion “effect astonished audiences by making images come to life.By start early twenties, people become bored with the conventional method and thus the popularity of animation this fall. Winsor McCay is’ Gertie the Dinosaur”, which appeared in 1914, was greatly appreciated by the general public. In particular animation, McCay has developed his character in dinosaurs. Of all the early animation, develop ‘Felix the Cat “strongest screen personality, but failed to develop further, relying on a crude visual tricks to entertain the audience as opposed to developing a strong screen persona. Even now, animation is considered a great way to entertainment for people of all age groups with educational values of
