For over 25 years Avrim Katzman has been the senior professor in the internationally renowned Computer Animation Program at Sheridan College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning as well as the founding Director and principal investigator of Sheridan’s first research institute, the Visualization Design Institute. He teaches Game Design and Theory, and Game Development, in the Communications Culture and Information Technology Program, a joint program with the University of Toronto, and is the curriculum architect of Sheridan’s Bachelor of Applied Arts degree in Game Design. Prof. Katzman’s current research focuses on the use of video games to improve cognitive functioning in older adults and the application of game technologies to feature film production.

In college and in the future, I want to do graphic design, computer animation, digital art…things like that. I’m not really sure what department/major those are considered as; many universities are ambiguous.

    You might consider pursuing a more broad based college curriculum in the visual arts or design and acquire your tangible skills in specific disciplines of motion graphics, 3D, or graphic design from specific software tool focused tutorials.

    Many of the pro level applications have good tutorials built in, and there are 3rd party software and DVD training courses available as well as curriculums from providers such as Total Training.

    These days much of the 3D film work is done in Autodesk Maya, title and pro visual effects work is often done with After Effects and editorial with Final Cut Pro, (Avid is on the wane). Adobe Flash animation is also a valuable skill. As well, Autodesk Flame/Inferno hardware/software skills can provide a fiscally rewarding and creative industry experience.

    Generally, a strong background in Adobe Creative Suite, currently up to version CS4, will provide invaluable in landing a job and the skills learned here translate well to many applications. The best place to learn is often on-the-job; I know of many who have started as receptionists or traffic coordinators at VFX and editorial houses and worked their way in to creative roles.

    Just having the technical skills can end up leaving you in mundane roles in VFX however, there are scores of folks who end up executing others ideas or merely rotoscoping out rigs, wires and such in a tedious manner. Hence a broader design background can be helpful.

    Art Center College of Design in Pasadena is one of the better schools to consider.

    It depends on what you mean by “computer animation.”

    Some people refer to “computer animation” as the entire industry involved with creating an animation. If that’s the case, than if you are going to be a programmer, technical director, involved in pipelines, and even work with shaders (i.e. the way things are rendered), then you’d go with computer science.

    If you are literally just planning on animating itself, concept design, modelling, then you would go with visual arts.

    This is spoken in general. It depends on how your university is organized.
