Interferons may work directly on cancer cells to slow their growth, or they can cause cancer cells to transform into cells with more normal behavior. colony-stimulating factors (CSFs) are proteins given to patients to encourage stem cells in the bone marrow to produce more blood cells. When cancer patients receive chemotherapy, the ability of bone marrow to produce new blood cells are suppressed, making patients more susceptible to developing infections
